Energy Drinks Do More Harm than Good

energy drink heart risksAccording to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the consumption of energy drinks increases the risk of cardiovascular problems and heart disease, even in young adults. The study found that consumption of energy drinks caused a significant increase in blood pressure and catecholamines.

The study tested 25 healthy, young adults that averaged 29 years old. They each drank a 16-ounce energy drink or similar tasting placebo drink. After consuming the energy drink, scientists found that participants had a significant increase in blood pressure and Norepinephrine levels. Norepinephrine levels increased in those energy drink consumers by 74 percent, compared with only a 31 percent increase in those that consumed the placebo drink.

Norepinephrine is a stress hormone responsible for regulating the flight or fight response system in the brain. When this hormone is triggered, blood pressure increases. Over time, increased blood pressure can put your heart at risk for serious heart conditions in the future, such as arrhythmias and ischemia. This raises a significant concern for teenagers who are consuming multiple energy drinks every day.

Based on our research on the issue, we believe that energy drinks are significantly more dangerous than coffee because of the synergistic effect of synthetic caffeine and other chemicals in energy drinks such as Taurine, Guarana, Panax Ginseng and Inositol.    Some medical professionals and experts in the field have indicated that energy drinks are not fit for human consumption. The study also suggests that physicians should regularly ask patients about energy drink consumption during routine checkups, so that vital signs can be better interpreted.
