Two Metropolitan Police Department officers were transported to the hospital in serious condition Monday after being struck by a vehicle while helping the driver of another car.
The officers were out of their vehicle assisting the driver of a disabled car on the shoulder of an Interstate 295 on-ramp near Interstate 695 in Southeast Washington when another vehicle lost control and collided with them and the stopped vehicle.
Police have reported that the officers were off-duty at the time and were driving back to their patrol area when they spotted the disabled vehicle and stopped to help.
The two officers passed the vehicle and parked their marked patrol cars off the shoulder of the highway just ahead before exiting their cars to help the driver of the vehicle. As they were assisting the driver, another vehicle slammed into them.
Several ambulances and a helicopter reported to the scene. According to police, one officer and one driver were taken to Medstar Washington Hospital Center by helicopter. The other officer was transported by ambulance to the same hospital, while the driver of the second vehicle was taken by ambulance to George Washington Hospital center. All four individuals suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
This portion of the highway was closed for several hours as police investigated the accident. It remains unknown why the first vehicle stopped and what caused the driver of the second vehicle to lose control.
