Residents Still Suffering from Aftermath of Winter Storm Jonas

winter storm accidents and injuriesMaryland and Washington D.C. residents are still dealing with the aftermath of winter storm Jonas, which led to many accidents and injuries.

On Monday, Jan. 26, a man walking along Georgia Avenue at Janet Road was hit by a snow plow in Silver Spring. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Local police pled for pedestrians to stay out of the streets, sidewalks and intersections if they are not shoveled. The department also expressed that drivers should be extra careful when turning corners with snow piles that may limit visibility.

Fairfax County Police also warned drivers to look out for pedestrians near bus stops as many sidewalks remained covered in snow through Wednesday, Jan. 27.

As some residents returned to work, accidents snarled traffic during morning commutes. The outer loop of the Capital Beltway was shut down early Wednesday morning after an accident involving three tractor trailers. Near Dulles Toll Road, another tractor trailer accident left only one lane open.

In Maryland, a tractor-trailer jackknifed and closed the local lanes of I-270 southbound at Montrose Road. A second jackknifed semi-trailer caused a backup on I-270 near Old Hundred Road.

Police in D.C. were also busy as the District issued more than $1 million worth of parking tickets and towed more than 650 cars. The District intends to continue to ticket or tow vehicles parked or abandoned on any snow emergency route or those considered to be road hazards. Cars should be parked no more than 12 inches from a curb, not a snow bank, or drivers risk being ticketed or towed.

Drivers should expect slick road conditions as winter weather continues to hit the area. The attorneys at Goldberg Finnegan encourage drivers to be extra cautious if they must travel, leave early for your destination, and expect road delays.
