A Fredrick County boy was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver near the West Virginia border early Friday morning.
Accident investigators said that 15-year-old Tristan K. Long was walking back to his residence after missing the school bus at around 7 a.m. on Friday. Long was struck from behind by a Volkswagen Beetle. The driver fled after striking Long, and the boy died at the scene.
Virginia State Police issued a call for help in finding the hit-and-run driver. They have received numerous tips, which lead to the recovery of the vehicle that struck Long. The driver, however, has not yet been located or arrested.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there has been a 15% increase in pedestrian accidents nationwide since 2009. This may be due to an increase in cell phone use and driver distraction. Police recommend that pedestrians wear brightly colored clothing when walking, stay on sidewalks if possible, and walk facing traffic if no sidewalks are available.
The attorneys at Goldberg Finnegan offer their sincere condolences to Tristan's family.
