Bard Recovery and Bard G2 Filters

IVC filters are small, cage-like devices used by doctors to prevent blood clots from reaching vital organs like the brain, heart or lungs. Patients who have deep vein thrombosis are at a greater risk for developing blood clots in the lower body, which can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, or to other important organs.

The filters are placed in the inferior vena cava (IVC), which is the main vessel that returns blood from the lower body to the heart. Many IVC filters, such as the Bard Recovery IVC filter, are removable, however, they are often never retrieved. Over time, the IVC filters can fracture into metal splinters that can travel through the vessel and cause serious harm.

The Bard Recovery and G2 IVC filters are manufactured by C. R. Bard and Cook Group, Inc. Several lawsuits have been filed against C.R. Bard and its subsidiary companies claiming negligence, design defects, negligent misrepresentation, manufacturing defects, breach of implied warranty and more.

Bard IVC Filter Risks and Complications

As an injured victim of a Bard IVC filter, you may find yourself in the ER with severe chest pain and shortness of breath. IVC complications can include:

  • Hemorrhage
  • Continual severe pain in chest, heart or anywhere
  • Respiratory compromise
  • Constant anxiety about metal shards in organs
  • Perforation of vessels, tissues, and organs
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Death

If you experience these side effects and your CT scan shows that your IVC filter has failed, immediate surgery is necessary to remove metal fragments, along with the IVC filter. Our IVC filter lawyers can help you get the compensation you need to help cover medical costs.

FDA Warns of IVC Filter

The FDA addressed clinicians and doctors in an August 2010 advisory. The advisory included recommendations that retrievable IVC filters be taken out of patients who no longer need protection from pulmonary embolism. It also encouraged doctors to consider the risks and benefits of using such IVC devices in patients.

Between 2005 and 2010, the FDA received 921 adverse event reports of IVC filter complications, including:

  • 70 IVC perforations
  • 328 device migrations
  • 56 IVC filter fractures
  • 146 IVC embolizations or detachments of the device components
