Lawsuits Filed Against Johnson & Johnson

More than one thousand talcum powder lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson claiming that the company knew about the risks of developing cancer after using talcum powder, yet failed to warn consumers.

In February 2016, a jury awarded a woman’s family $72 million in damages and found Johnson & Johnson liable for fraud, negligence and conspiracy. The woman had used the company’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products for feminine hygiene for more than 35 years before she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and later died in October 2015.

In 2013, a jury in South Dakota concluded that there was a link between a woman’s ovarian cancer and talcum powder. She had used Johnson & Johnson’s talc powder products for about 30 years before being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006.

If you believe your cancer was caused by talc powder, a talcum powder lawsuit may be right for you.

Link Between Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

Researchers have been studying the potential link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer for decades. Although talc is a natural mineral used in a variety of products, the body has a difficult time removing the particles, which can lead to inflammation and the formation of cancerous tumors.

In 1971, one of the first studies on the topic found talc particles deeply imbedded within ovarian cancer tumors. Several years later, a 1962 study of more than 120,000 female registered nurses identified a moderate increase in risk of ovarian cancer after using talcum powder.

Then in 1982, a landmark study found that women using talc powder for female hygiene during ovulation had a 92 percent increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.

More than 20 additional studies have since been conducted on the topic, almost all of which have identified a link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.

Both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute have included talcum powder when applied to the genital area as a risk factor for ovarian cancer.

Failure to Warn Consumers

Despite numerous studies linking talcum powder to increased risks of ovarian cancer, Johnson & Johnson continues to sell products that contain talc powder.

And despite countless calls for the company to add a warning label to its products, it continues to fail to warn consumers about these dangerous risks.
