Does Risperdal Cause Boys to Develop Breasts?
Medical literature indicates that Risperdal can cause an increase in Prolactin which is the hormone that causes breast development and lactation.
The medical term for a male who develops breasts is “gynecomastia.” Although the FDA has only approved Risperdal (Risperidone) for a very narrow category of mental illness, it has been heavily marketed for off-label use to children for years.
Until 2006 Risperdal was not approved for use in children for any purpose.
Risperdal Lawsuits
There have been well over 150 lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson (and its Janssen unit) claiming that Risperdal has caused breast development in males. The Risperdal cases have been consolidated in Pennsylvania State Court, and there is also a consolidation of Risperdal cases pending in California. Several trials were scheduled, and it has been reported that Johnson & Johnson has settled some of these cases for a confidential amount.
In November 2013 Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. pleaded guilty and agreed to pay $1.6 Billion for misbranding of Risperdal (Risperidone) into commerce.
The FDA has only approved Risperdal for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute mania, and certain episodes of bipolar disorder. It was not approved for use by children until 2006.
Young boys and teenagers who develop breasts can suffer from severe psychological trauma, and many end up needing breast removal surgery. What makes the Risperdal problem even worse is that the young boys who take Risperdal generally have other psychological problems. The development of male breasts, and the embarrassment and teasing that can ensure, is happening to a very vulnerable population of patients.
