Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring. A huge fire and explosion rocked the Apartments and knocked them to the ground. As of 10 a.m., about 30 people were taken to the hospital with injuries, and several others are still unaccounted for as a result of a tragic explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments that occurred last night. The debris from the explosion extended approximately 40-50 yards beyond the buildings and included doors, wood, glass and bricks. The incident occurred at the Flower Branch Apartments at 8701 and 8703 Piney Branch Road near University Boulevard. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

At this point, the cause of the blast is unknown and is under investigation. We suspect, based on the limited facts available at this time, that the cause could have been a gas leak. Witnesses describe hearing a loud boom and feeling the ground shake like an earthquake. Washington Gas has not acknowledged responsibility for the incident, but is apparently providing information to government officials related to the incident.
