Fungal Meningitis Linked to Compounding Pharmacy In Massachusetts
The name of the company believed to be responsible for the fungal meningitis outbreak is the New England Compounding Center.
This company voluntarily recalled all products circulated from its operations out of Framingham, Massachusetts, and the center for disease control is now doing a multi-state investigation of meningitis appearing in patients who have received spinal injections.
The contaminated injections were given May 21, 2012.
As of 6 PM on October 8, 2012 the Center for Disease Control reports 105 cases of fungal meningitis in 9 states including Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina, New York and New Jersey. 8 deaths due to this fungal meningitis have been reported.
These numbers are expected to grow substantially in the upcoming days and weeks.
What is Fungal Meningitis?
Fungal Meningitis is a rare and potentially deadly illness that occurs when fungus is spread through blood to the spinal cord. The protective membrane covering the brain and spinal cord become infected with the fungus. It causes sickness, illness, strokes, and sometimes even death.
The treatment of fungal meningitis is extremely difficult. It is important to understand that this form of meningitis is not contagious, and it is typically acquired when the fungus is injected directly into the central nervous system or an infected body site adjacent to the Central Nervous System.
Those who have been sickened due to this meningitis outbreak may have a legal claim for compensation.
What To Do If You Believe You Or A Loved One Has Been Exposed to Fungal Meningitis?
The Center for Disease Control recommends that patients who feel sick and are concerned after having received an epidural pain injection should contact their physician or report to the emergency room.
Symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Fever
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Slurred speech
- Trouble walking
- Going to the bathroom
It has been reported that it can take anywhere from 2-28 days from the time the fungal meningitis is introduced to the body until symptoms occur.
If you experience these symptoms, you should seek medical help right away.
