False Identity and Medical Degrees

On Nov. 15, 2016, Dr. Charles Akoda – whose real name is Oluwafemi Charles Igberase – entered a guilty plea with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland for using a fake Social Security account number to obtain a medical license in Maryland.

The plea agreement states that Dr. Charles Akoda entered the U.S. in Oct. 1991 on a nonimmigrant visa. Once in the country, he used different names, birth dates, Social Security numbers and other identifying information to obtain certifications from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). The ECFMG provides certification to international medical school graduates before they can enter graduate school and residency programs to practice medicine in the U.S.

He was issued three certificates under different names and different Social Security numbers between 1992 and 1998, two of which were revoked or suspended in Dec. 1995 when the ECFMG realized they had been fraudulently obtained.

After receiving his third ECFMG certification in 1998 under the name of Charles John Nosa Akoda, the man was admitted to a residency program in New Jersey. However, two years later, he was kicked out of the program once officials learned that he had used a false Social Security number.

After completing residency at another facility, Dr. Charles Akoda fraudulently obtained a medical license in Maryland in Sept. 2011. He then went on to practice obstetrics and gynecology for several years and obtained medical privileges at Prince George’s Hospital Center.

According to the Maryland State Board of Physicians, he continuously renewed his license until Sept. 30, 2016 when the license expired.

Dr. Charles Akoda was indicted by the United States Attorney on June 1, 2016 for Social Security account number fraud and aggravated identity theft. In accordance with his plea agreement, Dr. Charles Akoda will be sentenced to six months in prison, six months of home detention and three years of supervised release if the court accepts the plea agreement.
